Aurae louvre system

Louvre Roofs

Product Overview

The Aurae opening louvre (or louver) roof system is the perfect way to finish an outdoor living area in New Zealand. With manual or motorised options available, the adjustable aluminium blades pivot open to let in natural light and fresh air, or close to create shelter when the weather turns, giving you control over light, shade, and airflow to suit how you like to live and entertain. Our louvre roof system has been engineered to provide:

  • Robust and reliable performance in high wind and coastal conditions
  • Simple manufacture, installation, and operation, offered in manual or motorised formats
  • An architecturally appealing finish with clean lines, concealed gutters, and a wide powder-coat palette

Aurae louvres are designed to integrate with decks, patios and terraces so you can use these spaces more often throughout the year.

Applications

Freestanding steel frame

A freestanding steel frame with an opening louvre roof is ideal where you want a clearly defined outdoor room away from the main building. This layout works well over a deck, paved courtyard or poolside area, and is popular for homes that need an extra covered space for entertaining family and friends.

By separating the louvre roof from the house, you can create a destination zone in the garden, with room for an outdoor dining table, lounge seating or a spa. The open sides keep the area feeling light and connected to the landscape, while the blades above protect from strong sun and passing showers so the space stays usable more often.

Freestanding aluminium frame

A freestanding aluminium frame is a lighter, refined option that still gives you a strong structure for the opening louvre roof. This approach suits residential projects where the louvre roof is close to the house but not fixed directly to the main building, or where you want a more delicate frame profile that blends with the architecture.

Use a freestanding aluminium frame to create another dining space or outdoor room that feels like a natural extension of the home. It is a good choice for terraces, balconies and smaller courtyards where visual simplicity and clean detailing are important, but you still want a sheltered area for everyday use.

Wall fixed opening roof

A wall fixed opening louvre roof connects directly to the side of the home, which makes it ideal for increasing indoor–outdoor flow. Fixing the louvre roof back to the wall allows you to carry the ceiling plane out over a deck or patio, effectively extending the living or dining area outdoors.

This layout is often used for covered alfresco zones, where you want shelter close to the kitchen or lounge. With the blades open you can enjoy sun and cross-breezes on warmer days, and with the blades closed you have a sheltered outdoor room that can be used in a wider range of weather conditions, from weekday breakfasts to evening barbecues.

Custom Louvre Systems

Want to achieve something unique with louvres?

If you have a project that needs something beyond a standard opening louvre roof layout, the Aurae team can help with custom solutions. We regularly work with architects and designers to adapt our louvre systems for different structures and design intents.

Past custom projects include louvred fences, chimney cowls, balustrades and vehicle gates, along with bespoke pergolas and outdoor rooms. Share your plans with us early in the design process and we can advise on spans, fixing details and control options that will keep the project buildable, comfortable to spend time in, and aligned with the overall design of the home.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the roof fully waterproof?

The louvre blades lock together when closed and perimeter gutters collect and discharge water to downpipes. Flashing details between the louvre structure and the building are important to manage water tracking and are covered in our fixing details. When installed correctly, this allows the covered area to stay dry and usable during typical passing showers.

Will I need council consent?

Many open sided roofs under 30 m² can fall under minor building work, but rules vary by council and by site. Aurae provides producer statements and technical documentation to support consent where it is required, and we recommend checking your specific project with your designer or local council so your outdoor area is compliant as well as comfortable.

What wind zones does it cover?

Aurae louvre roofs are engineered to AS/NZS 1170 and can be specified for high-wind zones. Span tables specify the maximum spans achievable for each wind zone.

Can it retrofit to my existing frame?

Yes. Aurora and Solaris blades can be fixed to existing timber, steel or concrete structures, provided the structure is engineered for the additional loads. There are some specific fixing and support requirements, so we recommend discussing your existing frame with the Aurae team to confirm suitability before you build out the outdoor space.

How do the rain sensors work?

Rain sensors monitor for moisture and send a signal to the control unit when rain begins. The blades then close automatically, which is particularly useful for protecting outdoor furniture and finishes when you are not on site, and for keeping dining and seating areas ready to use when the weather changes suddenly.
